Founding Fathers
Stirring in their Graves
Could the stalemate in our politics have taken away the lustre in leadership?

Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and Kwame Nkrumah would stir over and over again if they got their hands on the research results. While the pull of leadership attracts an impressive 23% of Tanzanians and 22% of Nigerians, only 12% of Kenyans and Ghanaians, 15% of Ugandans, 11% of Angolans and 6% of Mozambiqueans long for positions of leadership. What happened to leadership ambitions most of our fellow countrymen had at independence? Could the stalemate in our politics have taken away the lustre in leadership? Our political scenes are full of old guards, showing not many people want to get into leadership roles. If this imbalance is corrected, maybe our founding fathers will finally rest peacefully in their graves.

If the founding fathers of Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Angola, Kenya and Tanzania were alive today, only Tanzania's Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Nigeria's Namdi Azikiwe would sit back and agree with the sages that the boy is truly the father of the man. Recent research by Consumer Insight shows that the dream of being a leader isn't one that many people go to bed wishing to wake up and find a reality.
